Folder Menu on Taskbar
Folder Menu on Taskbar
Normally, folders like My documents or some others have to be accessed from the start menu or desktop, and they open a window. Although you can set some folders to scroll from the start menu, it is sometimes easier to make a "folder menu" that can simply be expanded from the taskbar.
1. Right-click the taskbar, and uncheck Lock the Taskbar.
2. Right-click the taskbar again, and go to Toolbars > New Toolbar...
3. A dialog will come up. Click the folder you want as a menu.
4. If the folder suddenly consumes the taskbar, move the handle next to the title to the right until only the title and the double-arrow expansion button can be seen (next to the tray area).
5. Right-click the taskbar, and check Lock the Taskbar again.
The folder will now be accessible in a menu-like fashion from the taskbar. Big time saver! If you want to remove it later on, just right-click the taskbar, and uncheck the folder title you want removed under Toolbars.
Note: Also works in Windows 2000, ME, and 98.

Getting rid of unwanted items in "open with..." s
When rightclicking any file you´re likely to see an option called "open with", which lists any available program on you computer to open the file with. To simply clear up this list of unwanted items, or to remove useless associations, like opening an mp3 file with a paint program, follow these steps:
- Click on the start button, click on Run... and type the word "regedit" (without the quotes) in the box that appears to open the registry editor
- Navigate to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts"
- Find the extention you wish to edit and click on the "+"-sign to locate the key that says "OpenWithList"
- In the right pane of the registry editor you´ll see a list with the programs in the list, like "paint.exe" or "notepad.exe"
- Simple click on the one you wish to delete and press the delete button on your keyboard
Don´t worry if you´ve removed an entry you rather hadn´t removed. When rightclicking a file there will be another option in the "open with" extension where you can choose any program on your computer. Once used, it will reappear in the list of associated programs.

More quick key tips!
Ok, I can't believe someone submitted the Windows Key+E to launch explorer as a 'tweak', but I guess you'd be really happy to learn about it if you didn't already know.
In the spirit of higher learning, here's a few more:
Windows Key + F - Launch Find tool
Windows Key + M - Mimimize all open windows
Windows Key + R - Launch the 'Run' button
Windows Key + U - Launch the utility manager (win2k & XP only?)
Alt + Tab (Hold Alt & Press Tab repeadly) - Task Switcher
Alt + F4 - kills the 'active' application - fun(?) for killing web popup windows quickly when they are coming at you like spam madness!
Ctrl+Alt+Del - In Win9x/ME (why are you using that?) it launches a 14m3 version of NT/2K/XP's Task Manager. In NT/2K/XP you get a menu with useful options for lock computer, logoff, shutdown, change password, task manager etc.
Have fun! And enjoy the cool tweaks that are here...

Permanent Acceleration Fix
It seems that even without pointer precision disabled, the mouse under XP is still influenced by an acceleration curve. This is especially noticeable in games. To completely remove mouse acceleration from XP, you will need to go into the registry and adjust the SmoothmouseXYCurve values. Here is how its done.
1. Click Start button
2. Select Run
3. Type 'regedit' in the open textbox
4. Open the tree 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER', select control panel, then select mouse
5. Right clicking, modify the SmoothMouseXCurve and SmoothMouseYCurve hexidecimal values to the following:
SmoothMouseXCurve:
00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00
00,a0,00,00,00,00,00,00
00,40,01,00,00,00,00,00
00,80,02,00,00,00,00,00
00,00,05,00,00,00,00,00
SmoothMouseYCurve:
00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00
66,a6,02,00,00,00,00,00
cd,4c,05,00,00,00,00,00
a0,99,0a,00,00,00,00,00
38,33,15,00,00,00,00,00
If done correctly, you will notice you are holding a markedly more responsive mouse. =====================================================================================
Preview Multimedia
A few days ago I posted a tweak for previewing audio files. Since then it suddenly dawned on me that the same applies for all formats supported by the mplay32.exe, including video - e.g. AVI, MPG, ASF, etc. - and CD audio as well.
So, here goes: If you want to quickly view a supported format audio/video file, and don't want to wait until Media Player loads, you can create a new action for these file types, called e.g. "Preview", with "C:\Windows\System32\Mplay32.exe" /Play "%L" as application specification. Oh, yes, that's in Explorer under Tools/Folder Options/File Types/Advanced/New.

Preview Music Files
If you want to quickly listen to a WAV, MID or RMI files, and don't want to wait until Media Player loads, you can create a new action for these file types, called e.g. "Preview", with "C:\Windows\System32\Mplay32.exe" /Play "%L" as application specification. Oh, yes, that's in Explorer under Tools/Folder Options/File Types/Advanced/New.

Quick access to your files
This works in earlier versions of Windows as well. Simply click and drag your My Computer icon onto the Task Bar near the right side icons next to the clock. This will create a cascading menu from where you can easily access just about anything on your system. OR - right-click on the task bar, choose "toolbar" - and then click on My Computer.

super fast user switching
(EXPERIENCED USERS ONLY)
Super fast user switching is a powertoy which makes it easy to switch the active user. But you must be a member of the administrator group to see other users! Quite useless for normal users, but this is done on purpose. I contacted Lou, the programmer of fast.exe, and he said (quote):
"It actually has to do with permissions. As a regular user, you don't have access to the (InteractiveLogon) service. This is because I didn't want to open another hole in Windows. This is unavoidable."
The solution opens a hole, but makes super fast user switching usable. THIS IS ONLY FOR EXPERIENCED USERS!
1. remove task.exe from the local_machine ~ windows ~ run registry entry (you can use start --> run --> msconfig for that)
2. create a fast.cmd file wich contains the line below:
runas /noprofile /env /savecred /user:YOURMACHINE\Administrator "c:\windows\system32\fast.exe"
replace YOURMACHINE by your machine name
3. copy fast.cmd to your windows directory
4. make a shortcut to c:\windows\fast.cmd, let the shortcut run minimized
5. copy the shortcut to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
You have to run fast.cmd manually one time for each user to supply the administrator password. This has to be done only once.
This solution won't work for XP home edition because that edition won't store the security credentials.
For your information: the user process fast.exe will communicate with the service task.exe to perform it's task. Meddling with the fast -service properties won't work (I tried...).
Don't do this on production systems, it's meant for home use where security is less important.
Happy user switching!

Do you know ?{[[1 of my best}}]]
Do you know ?
There is an interesting fact about Headphones i.e. they can also be used as a microphone !
Technically :
There is not much difference between the circuits of a Microphone and a Headphone , just the headphone is designed to spread voice and an microphone to capture the voice !
Working :
So if you connect the headphone in the microphone slot of your computer, you could use it as a microphone.
Just speak in the ear buds of the microphone, but please speak a bit loudly to be audible at the other end !
** Remember it is just a temporary solution !

A couple more keyboard shortcuts
CTRL + ALT + ESC
While in a full-screen window will launch the task bar. If used while not in a full screen window, it will work like ATL + TAB without the option of choosing which window and simply go to the window whose button is to the RIGHT of the current window.
ALT + D [MSIE]
This will move the cursor to the Address bar, highliting all the text in the bar as well.
ALT + TAB (With Shift)
If you have many windows open, using ALT + TAB can be kind of annoying if you miss the program you're seeking. Adding SHIFT and pressing TAB again will move the highlite back one.
CTRL + TAB
When working with multiple frames/panes, this will jump from one frame to another without having to TAB to the end of the current pane to move to the next. Press TAB again to enter the frame/pane you select.
SHIFT + CLICK (Explorer/MSIE)
This does the same thing as RIGHT CLICKing and selecting "Open in new window". Sometimes, however, I find that you have to DOUBLE CLICK to make it work.
SHIFT + RIGHT CLICK (Explorer)
This gives you an extra option, "Open With..." for certain (most) files types.
WINKEY + L (Using the "Welcome" style logon)
Same as [Start>Log Off>Switch User].
F1
Opens the Help dialogue for most programs.
F3
When searching using a typical text "Find..." feature, this will do the same as "Find next".
That's all for now... Happy tweaking!
