Here are three options:
* Click on START - RUN and type: Regedit (press ENTER). On the menu bar click on file, then export, choose where you want to save it, then enter a name for it in the box titled: File Name. At bottom put a tick in "All", then click on save. If you ever want to restore the saved version, just IMPORT it.
* System Restore (it should save a copy daily, but you can always create a restore point manually.
* The best method, in my opinion, is to download and run ERUNT. It's the best registry backup utility available - and it's free!!!

Create a shortcut to switch users
Fast user switching has been a very useful feature of Windows for multi-user computers. Dating back to Windows XP, fast user switching allows multiple users to be logged into a computer at once. This is very useful if a user is in the middle of work but another needs to use the computer shortly. Fast user switching will allow the other user to log in while still retaining the other users session. Once the other user is finished the session can be switched back to the original user.
Creating a shortcut to switch the active user is as easy as creating a shortcut to c:\windows\system32\tsdiscon.exe
1. Right click where you want the shortcut to be created and select New and then Shortcut.
2. Copy and paste “c:\windows\system32\tsdiscon.exe” into the location box and hit Next.
3. Give it a name and hit Finish.

Easy re-install of Windows Applications
If you need to re-install a 'hidden' Windows component, eg. outlook express or messenger, there is an easy way to do this... [but you will have to BE CAREFUL!]
1. Open the INF folder in your windows folder [C:\WINDOWS\INF]
2. Find the *.inf files [view>arrange icons by>type]
3. Find the application title you need in the filename [for example messenger is msmsgs.inf] If you are unsure of the installer, RIGHT CLICK on the file, then select open, at the top of the file should say what application it is:
; MSMSGS.INF
; Setup INF file for Messenger
4. When you have found the file the right click on it then click install.
Tip: To reinstall Microsoft Outlook Express, Right click and select install on MSOE50.inf

How To Do a Repair Install of XP
* Make sure the BIOS is set to boot from the CD (put the CD above the HD in the boot order)
* Insert the XP CD and boot to it
* When you see " To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER", go ahead and press ENTER
* You will now see an option to repair Windows by pressing "R". Do not select this option - it will only take you to the Recovery Console which is not what we want to do. Instead, choose to continue the installation
* When you see the license agreement, press F8 to agree
* On the next screen make sure your current XP installation is selected and then press "R" to repair XP
* At this point XP will begin to install on top of itself, replacing damaged, missing or altered system files. Follow the instructions on the remaining screens to complete the Repair Install. It will look very much like a normal (new) OS installation.
If all goes well your repaired XP installation will remain iintact, keeping your personalized settings and installed programs as they originally were. Remember, choose the second repair option, not the first.

Removing Startup Items located in the registry
The System Configuration Utility displays items that start with your PC. These items are generally located in one of two areas. The registry or in Common Startup.
Should you decide to prevent specific items from starting up you can uncheck them in the System Configuration Utility. Though this method is fine it is ultimately best to remove them from the source. To access the common registry locations of these items take a look in the following areas:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
If you have disabled items in the System Configuration Utility and would like to remove them from the registry also they can be found in one of the following locations:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SharedTools\MSConfig\startupfolder
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg
Note: Always make a backup of the Registry prior to making changes. {for advance users}

You can put the Run... command found in the Start Menu on the desktop or anywhere else you want
1)Click on the Start Menu
2)Drag the Run... command to the desktop
3)You can then cut and paste it anywhere you like.
I put it in my Quick launch toolbar, it saves you a mouse click and possibly a little time.
(Works only in XP style Start Menu not in the classic, and make sure "Enable dragging and dropping" is activated in Start Menu properties.)

Clicking AVI Files on explorer causing 100% CPU Us
Well windows seem to have a REALLY big problem when it comes to reading AVI files. It seems that when you click on an AVI file in explorer, it'll try to read the entire AVI file to determine the width, height, etc. of the AVI file (this is displayed in the Properties window). Now the problem with Windows is that if you have a broken/not fully downloaded AVI file that doesnt contain this info, Windows will scan the entire AVI file trying to figure out all these properties which in the process will probably cause 100% CPU usage and heavy memory usage.
To solve this problem all you have to do is the following:
1. Open up regedit
2. Goto HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler
3. Delete the "Default" value which should be "{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}"
Voila! Please not that this will no longer provide you with the windows properties displaying the AVI file information such as width, height, bitrate etc. But its a small price to pay for saving you resources.
NOTE: Please use caution when using regedit. Improper usage may cause windows to behave imcorrectly. Also, I cannot be held resposible. Backup your registry first

Correcting System Hang at Startup
If your system hangs about 2 or 3 minutes at startup, where you can't access the Start button or the Taskbar, it may be due to one specific service (Background Intelligent Transfer) running in the background. Microsoft put out a patch for this but it didn't work for me. Here's what you do:
1. Click on Start/Run, type 'msconfig', then click 'OK'.
2. Go to the 'Services' tab, find the 'Background Intelligent Transfer' service, disable it, apply the changes & reboot.
This problem with the Background Intelligent Transfer Service should have been corrected in Windows update Q 314862, part of Service Pack 1.

Easy Way to Adjust LargeSystemCache
Normally, the tweak I've seen asks you to go into HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management and change the value to either O or 1 to the adjustment the
LargeSystemCache.
However, in Windows XP, all you have to do is:
1. Right click My Computer
2. Select Properties
3. Click Advanced
4. Choose Performance
5. Click Advanced again
6. Select either Programs or System Cache under Memory Usage.
Programs = 0 for the registry tweak equilavent
System Cache = 1 for the registry tweak equilavent
From arstechnica.com:
On NT Server (in this case XP), the Large System Cache option is enabled, but disabled on Workstation. The two different settings effect how the cache manager allocates free memory. If the Large Cache option is on, the manager marks all the free memory, which isn't being used by the system and/or applications, as freely available for disk caching. On the flip-side (with a small cache), the manager instead only sets aside 4MB of memory for disk caching in an attempt to accelerate the launch of applications. Or in a more technical approach, if enabled the system will favor system-cache working sets over process working sets (with a working set basically being the memory used by components of a process).
=======================================================================================
Memory Performance Tweak
These Settings will fine tune your systems memory
management -at least 512MB of ram recommended
go to start\run\regedit -and then to the following key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
1.DisablePagingExecutive -double click it and in the decimal put a 1 - this allows XP to keep data in memory now instead of paging sections of ram to harddrive yeilds faster performance.
2.LargeSystemCache- double click it and change the decimal to 1 -this allows XP Kernel to Run in memory improves system performance alot
Reboot and watch your system fly ..happy tweakin
Note: This tweak may cause problems with ATI cards *this is documented by ATI(tweak forum Admin)

Shutdown XP Faster
1) Start - Run - Regedit
Navigate to the following Registry key:
HKEY CURRENT USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Double click on the AutoEndTasks entry and replace the 0 with a 1 in the Value data text box
For the next two, if the dword value indicated does not exist, create it:
Double click on the WaitToKillAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 2000
Double click on the HungAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 1000
Reboot
If still having a problem, make the next change:
2) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
Right-click on WaitToKillServiceTimeout and change it to 2000
NOTE: The lowest value Windows will recognize is 1000 (1 second)
ADVISORY: While rare, the "WaitToKillService" tweak can cause problems. If an application is in the process of saving data and the associated service is stopped prematurely, the data will not be saved and may be lost. (Tweak, Note and Advisory from Forum Admin)

Stop Jerkey Graphics
I have for a long time had problems with "jerky" graphics in some 3d games and 3dmark, and have had relativly high cpu loads in idle condition.
The cpu load would pulse from 1-2% up to 10-12%-load with about three-five seconds intervals...(in idle)
The jerking has not been due to low perfomance hardware or old drivers and I have had the problems on two seperate systems.
If you are connected to a LAN and have similar problems, this might be the solution:
1.RightClick "MyComputer"
2.Select "Manage"
3.Click on "Device Manager"
4.DoubleClick on your NIC under "Network Adapters"
5.In the new window, select the "Advanced" tab
6.Select "Connection Type" and manuelly set the value of your NIC. (Not "Auto Sense" which is default.)
7.You should reboot...
On my systems the "jerking" in 3D games was completly gone, and so was the high idle cpu load.
This tip also applies to Win2K.

Unload .dll's to Free Memory
Windows Explorer caches DLLs (Dynamic-Link Libraries) in memory for a period of time after the application using them has been closed. This can be an inefficient use of memory.
1. Find the key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer].
2. Create a new sub-key named 'AlwaysUnloadDLL' and set the default value to equal '1' to disable Windows caching the DLL in memory.
3. Restart Windows for the change to take effect.
I tried this after running a intense program, then watched the task manager; memory recovered it self.

Checking for Connection Problems
Anytime your network refuses to send and receive data properly , your first troubleshooting step should be to check fof problems with the physical connection between the local computer and the rest of the network. Assuming your network connection uses the TCP/IP protocol , your most potent weapon is the Ping ulity. When you use the Ping command with no parameters , Windows sends four echo datagrams , small Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) packets, to the address you specify. If the machine at the other end of the connection replies, you know that the network connection between the two points is alive.
To use the Ping command , open a Windows command prompt window (Cmd.exe in Windows XP) and tape the command ping target_name (where target_name is an IP address or the name of another host machine ).
If all the packets you send come back properly in roughly the same time , your TCP/IP connection is fine and you can focus your troubleshooting efforts elsewhere.
Enjoy !

A to Z Useful Windows Run Commands
A to Z Useful Windows Run Commands
Do you use the Run feature in Windows XP?
For most, this feature remains unused (or rarely used). Why is that? Well, First off nearly all of the Run Commands Correspond to a particular Control Panel Item or a Utility, Tool or Task that can be accessed through Windows. There are, however, tools and utilities that I bet you never knew you had that can be accessed through the Run feature. The main reason most people don't use the Run feature is because they don't know the Commands. So, to solve that problem, I decided to put together the following listing, which lists A to Z Run Commands and what they correspond too...

General Tips:
* Always wipe the CD from the center outward with stratight spoke- like strokes. Wiping CDs in circles will create more scratches.
* Do not scratch the graphics layer as you cannot repair the disc.
HINT: Hold the disc up to a light with the graphics layer facing the
light source. If you can see light thru the scratches at any point
then the disc may be irreparable and or exhibit loading or playing
errors.
* Clean your Disc players lens regularly with a suitable product to ensure optimal viewing pleasure.
* Make sure to use a soft, lint-free cloth to clean both sides of the disc. Wipe in a straight line from the centre of the disc to the outer edge.
* If wiping with a cloth does not remove a fingerprint or smudge, use a specialized DVD disc polishing spray to clean the disc.
* Only handle the disc by its outer edge and the empty hole in the middle. This will help prevent fingerprints, smudges or scratches.
Statistics:
*Fingermarks/prints cause 43% of disc problems!
* General wear & tear causes 25% of disc problems!
* Player-related issues cause 15% of disc problems!
* User-related issues cause 12% of disc problems!
* PlayStation 2 machine scratches cause 3% of disc problems!
* Laser rot (a manufacturer error) causes 2% of disc problems!
another way of recovering data from scrached cd is to use a chemical called (isopropile) a chemical usualy used from cleaning circuit boards.
rub a piece of cloth weted with isoprpile in anticlock wise way.soon you yourself find your cd's sparkling.

How can I increase my hard disk speed in Windows X
To speed up your hard disk speed we need to configure a special buffer in the computer's memory in order to enable it to better deal with interrupts made from the disk.
This tip is only recommended if you have 256MB RAM or higher.
Follow these steps:
Run SYSEDIT.EXE from the Run command.
Expand the system.ini file window.
Scroll down almost to the end of the file till you find a line called [386enh].
Press Enter to make one blank line, and in that line type
Irq14=4096
Note: This line IS CASE SENSITIVE!!!
Click on the File menu, then choose Save.
Close SYSEDIT and reboot your computer.
Done. Speed improvement will be noticed after the computer reboots.

Add a program to the Right Click Menu
So as to Use it Everywhere by just doing a
Right-Clicking
When you right click on any folder, you can have access to that application, the same as using
Sent To and New. Open Registry Editor. Navigate and choose:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell. Add a new Key to the "Shell" Key and name
it anything you like. Give it a default value that will appear when you right click a
folder, i.e. NewKey (use an "&" without the quotes, in front of any character and it
will allow you to use the keyboard). Navigate and click on the registry key
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\NewKey. Now you have to add a New Key
named Command and Set the (Default) value of the application you want to run. For
example: c:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe (Include the full path)
=======================================================================================
Un-install Wordpad, Automatic Update,Messenger, Pi
Use Notepad or another text editor to open the Setup Information file, sysoc.inf, which is
generally found in the C:\WINDOWS\INF folder. For this folder to be visible, you will have
to enable hidden folders by going into Windows Explorer and choosing Tools Folder
Options ViewShow Hidden Files and Folders. The lines in the file follow the format:
program=program.dll,OcEntry,program.inf,,numeral
The Pinball game entry, as an example, looks like this:
Pinball=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,pinball.inf,HIDE,7.
Remove the word HIDE from the entry that refers to the component you want to remove.
Save the sysoc.inf file, and run the Windows Components Wizard under Add/Remove
programs. The component will now show up in the wizard. Remove it as you would any other
component.
=======================================================================================
Customize the “Send To” Option
Adding new locations and programs and taking away existing ones that you never use from
this menu is very simple. It's easy to hack. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\
\SendTo, where
folder will be filled with shortcuts to all the locations you find on your “Send To” context
menu. To remove an item from the Send To menu, delete the shortcut from the folder. To add
an item to the menu, add a shortcut to the folder by highlighting the folder, choosing File
New Shortcut, and follow the instructions for creating a shortcut. The new setting will take
effect immediately.

Faster Network Access
Faster Network Access
When you use My Network Places to browse for other machines on your network, Windows

resources present on the computer. We can do a registry hack to avoid this delay. Invoke the
Registry Editor by typing regedit at the command line. Open the following
Registrykey:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
\Explorer\RemoteComputer\NameSpace. Delete the following key {D6277990-4C6A-11CF-

CLSID's subkeyfor example, {00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} for Microsoft
Outlook you'll find the value Removal Message. Edit this value to whatever text you want,
and your warning message will appear whenever someone tries to delete the icon. This is just
an example. Follow the suit for customizing the error messages for other icons too!

Clean Up the “Open With” Menu
Clean Up the “Open With” Menu
When you right-click a file, you see the menu option “Open With”, which provides a list of
programs for you to open the file with. You can clean up the Open With list by using a
Registry hack. Run the Registry Editor (StartRunRegedit) and go to the key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer \FileExts.
Look for the file extension whose Open With list you want to edit and find its OpenWithList
subkey. The subkey will have an alphabetical list of String values. Open each value and
